A Pareto chart that ranks five causes as descending bars and lays a cumulative percentage line over them. A dashed cutoff rule at 80% marks where the vital few end, each bar carries its cause name and individual share underneath, and a single line at the bottom states how much disappears if the leading causes are closed. Bars are an accent face and the cumulative line is neutral ink, so the two series stay apart across all 44 themes.

Best for: Ranking defect or incident causes, classifying claim types, prioritizing cost reduction, breaking down churn reasons, picking the vital few
Use: When the point is that a few causes out of many account for most of the total. Use it to rank defect or incident causes, break down claim types, or set cost reduction priorities, wherever what to fix first has to be decided. Items must be in descending order, and the vital few end where the cumulative line crosses the 80% cutoff. The individual and cumulative shares are author-entered, so make the five values sum to 100%.
Avoid: Use chart-bar to merely list fixed categories with no sort contract, chart-waterfall-bridge for the delta path from a start to an end value, chart-mix-shift-columns for a composition shift between two periods, chart-sensitivity-tornado for swing widths around a shared center axis, and chart-donut-breakdown for a single-period breakdown. Fewer than three causes makes the Pareto meaningless, and past six the bars get too thin to read, so group them down.
